Christopher Plummer is set to replace Spacey in the role of J Paul Getty, with reshoots of key scenes expected to start immediately to keep the film's December 22 United States release date.
More fallout from the sexual harassment allegations against actor Kevin Spacey, as the Oscar victor is cut from an already shot movie, set to hit theaters within weeks.
The filmmaker made the decision unilaterally and only notified Sony of his decision late Wednesday afternoon, according to sources familiar with the situation, adding that Plummer was originally the first choice for the role, but top studio executives wanted a bigger name. Re-shoots of the key scenes are expected to commence immediately. Regarding that decision, TriStar issued a statement, noting, "All the Money in the World is a superb film".
It reportedly took Spacey 8 to 10 days to finish his part of the movie, which means Plummer doesn't have much time for the reshoots, TMZreported on Wednesday.
The trailer for "All The Money in the World", which tells the story of the kidnapping of Getty's 16-year-old grandson in Italy in 1973, shows Spacey as the fearsome patriarch who infamously refused to pay a ransom to secure the boy's release. When Getty Sr. refuses, Gail attempts to sway him as her son's captors become increasingly volatile and brutal.
Spacey has suffered a rapid fall from grace since actor Anthony Rapp, who starred in the 2005 musical Rent, accused Spacey of making sexual advances toward him in 1986 when Rapp was 14.
Since the sexual assault allegations against Spacey, we have also seen the cancellation of his House of Cards series, which was said to be on its way anyway.
"But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behaviour, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years".
