In a morning news briefing, Rockford Police Chief Dan O'Shea says the incident occurred shortly after 1 a.m.

Cox joined the Rockford department in December 2016, said a city spokeswoman.

Cox was rushed to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, O'Shea said, where he was pronounced dead.

Rockford police are cautious to say whether or not Cox was shot to death.

A Rockford police officer was killed early Sunday and another person was found dead in a vehicle when a traffic stop led to a reported shooting. "Continue supporting us, pray for Jaimie, pray for his wife, pray for his family, and pray for us as we get through this hard time". Officers arrived on the scene and found a single-vehicle auto crash about two blocks north of the initial traffic stop. Police responded to that area and found a single-car crash. Police have not identified that person or indicated the cause of death. Officers also found another person dead inside a vehicle.

Big plays cost Giants in loss to Rams
And yet, a screen pass from Jared Goff turned L.A. wideout Robert Woods into a hot knife, and the Giants' defense just melted. Running back Todd Gurley has run for at least 100 yards in each of his last two games and in four of his last five games.

He beforehand filled in as an officer for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, O'Shea said. He was a graduate of Hononegah High School and Northern Illinois University.

Cox died at a local hospital.

Rockford police planned to hold another media briefing at 12 p.m. Sunday.

O'Shea said Cox became "entangled" with the auto and fired a shot, but he declined to say how either man died or to provide additional details.

The area around State Street, Alpine Road, Dawn Avenue, and Turner Street are blocked off as the investigation continues.
