"You know, it'll come out", Page said. Papadopoulos told the Federal Bureau of Investigation, according to court documents, that in a national security meeting attended by Trump and campaign advisers, he "in sum and substance" said that "he had connections that could help arrange a meeting between then-candidate Trump and President Putin". Page said one of the people he met was a "senior person", but would not confirm the person's identity.
Sessions's participation in the gathering was detailed in court documents released Monday by special counsel Robert Mueller III.
In it, Papadopoulos said he was taking steps "to arrange a meeting between us and the Russian leadership to discuss U.S. -Russia ties under President Trump", according to court records.
Both Papadopoulos' and Page's statements appear to cast doubt on comments made by Sessions to the Senate multiple times since his confirmation hearing in early January, as well as remarks made by the president. The Minnesota Democrat said the latest disclosure suggests that the American people "cannot trust your word".
"He now needs to come back before the Committee, in person, under oath, to explain why he can not seem to provide truthful, complete answers to these important and relevant questions", Leahy, a former chairman of the Judiciary Committee, told The New York Times. The email went to "several members of the Campaign's foreign policy team", prosecutors alleged.
"He heard him out", JD Gordon, a campaign national security adviser who attended the March 31, 2016 meeting, told CNN Thursday.
Last month, Sessions testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee that neither he nor anyone else was in contact with Russian operatives during the election cycle. He wasn't aware of any ongoing exchanges of information during the campaign between Trump surrogates and intermediaries for the Russian government, the person said.
Sessions has been dogged over his testimony before Congress about interactions with Russians during the 2016 presidential campaign.
"He now needs to come back before the Committee, in person, under oath, to explain why he can not seem to provide truthful, complete answers to these important and relevant questions", Leahy said in a statement.
While Democrats made clear that the Papadopoulos revelations raise new questions about whether Sessions told the truth to Congress, there was little indication they'd pursue the politically and legally uncertain possibility that the nation's top law enforcement official could be prosecuted for perjury.
