The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled 37.8 million fire extinguishers because they might not work in an emergency.

Almost 38 million Kiddie fire extinguishers with plastic handles are being recalled because they may not work in emergencies or the nozzles can detach, and one death has already been reported because of it. Nozzles can also detach with enough force to hurt someone.

Consumers are asked to contact Kidde immediately to request a free replacement fire extinguisher and instructions on returning the recalled unit.

McMullen says Kidde's huge market share makes the recall worrisome. About 2.7 million of the extinguishers were also sold in Canada.

They were sold at Menards, Montgomery Ward, Sears, Home Depot, Wal-Mart and other home and hardware stores, as well as on Amazon.com, ShopKidde.com and assorted online retailers.

2 dead, 1 injured in shooting at Thornton Walmart
Customers and employees hid or fled toward the exits after gunshots rang out in Thornton, which is a suburb of Denver. Police have since announced that the situation is no longer an active shooting, but is still an active crime scene.

There has been at least one death as a result of the faulty fire safety tools: first responders "could not get the recalled Kidde fire extinguishers to work" in a 2014 auto fire, according to a news release.

Rosko's family later received a settlement from Kidde, according to the company.

The recall affects between 37 and 38 million extinguishers in the USA made from 1973 to this past September. These have plastic handles or were the push-button Pindicator models. "You can find the model number and serial number on the unit's label".

Kidde will replace the devices with new extinguishers made with metal parts.

Ann Marie Buerkle leads the agency ordering the recall.
