Martinez has agreed to a three-year deal with an option, the source told ESPN, confirming a report by The Washington Post. Now, the 53-year-old will likely face Maddon for years to come now that he is the new manager of the powerful Washington Nationals who has won the National League East four out of the last six years and lost in five games this year to the Cubs in the NLDS. As a first-time manager, Martinez is also about as opposite of Baker as it gets.
Martinez has served as bench coach for Joe Maddon since 2008, with the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cubs.
Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Nationals have chosen Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez to be their new manager.
Major League Baseball rules prohibit a team from making any official announcement until after the World Series. The Lerner family earned a reputation for putting little value on managers, a reputation born out in their unwillingness to provide extensions to veterans like Baker (or Jim Riggleman), and in their initial offers to candidates over the years. The Astros and Dodgers - both of whom have young managers similar to Martinez - play Game 5 of the World Series Sunday before an off-day Monday. Along the way, Martinez interviewed for a few manager openings, including to replace Davey Johnson in Washington, a job that eventually went to the hilariously miscast Matt Williams.
No manager has been guaranteed more than two years under current Nationals ownership (since 2006).
During his time under Maddon, Martinez appeared in the World Series with the Devil Rays and more recently the Cubs, who in 2016 broke the team's run of almost a century with no World Series' appearances.
