Battle between smart speakers intensify as Amazon Echo gets voice recognition feature
13 October 2017, 12:48 | Ruben Fields
The solution, for these mostly blind devices, has been voice recognition, first seen on the Google Home, and today available on Amazon's Echo range of smart speakers. The interesting thing to note here is that this process is a one-time thing and the voice profiles work across all other Echo devices and "most" third-party Alexa-powered devices.
KitGuru Says: This could make way for Alexa-powered devices to only respond to your voice, which in turn would make it much more hard for your friends or even South Park to prank you. The new feature started to roll out yesterday.
Once you set up the new feature through the Alexa app, your Echo will be able to offer a personalized experience based on who's speaking. Both Google and Amazon have been working to expand the offering of their respective smart speakers. Interestingly, voice recognition is very efficient, it means when you will say "Call mom", it will call your mom, not your friend's.
The company stated that now this feature is available to carry out calls and sending messages along with flash briefing, Amazon Music Unlimited Family Plan, and last but not the least, shopping. Alexa is now able to recognize your voice for Flash Briefings and automatically skips stories you listened to from your feed.
Scroll down to the end of the Accounts section and tap on Your Voice. According to the company, 10 given phrases have to be repeated for training the assistant to recognize a particular voice.
Fourth-quarter sales of smart speakers could reach almost 12 million units worldwide, bringing the full-year sales total to 24 million units, Strategy Analytics said in a news release. That new feature is the ability to identify voices and allow access to your own messages, playlists and other content without having to tell the Echo device specifically which content to access. Now you can get the device for just $200 at Amazon.
