The fire, which broke out around 9:45 a.m., was burning about a mile from the recent Canyon Fire that eventually blackened more than 2,600 acres and took more than a week to contain.
But while last month's Canyon Fire burned east, winds whipping at about 25 miles per hour pushed its sequel to the west on Monday, prompting mandatory evacuation orders for residents south of the Riverside Freeway and west of the 241 toll road.
The fire continued to burn on the east side of the 241 and south of 91 Freeway Tuesday morning. By late afternoon, ash from the fire was falling as far away as Long Beach and San Pedro. However, the boundary line was pronounced, and the area of the Canyon Fire 2 was still experiencing single-digit relative humidity levels, courtesy of the Santa Ana Winds.
But mandatory evacuations remain in place.
