Wildfires whipped by powerful winds swept through Northern California, sending residents on a headlong flight to safety through smoke and flames as homes burned.

"A warning was issued today because unsafe fire conditions will exist until Tuesday in several areas of the San Francisco Bay Area, National Weather Service officials said".

High winds overnight triggered the blazes to spread rapidly across the region, according to officials. Evacuations were also issued for surrounding counties that are under threat, according to the Napa Valley Sheriff's Office.

"The winds have just been outrageous here tonight, and essentially we are in a mode of saving people's lives and getting people out of harm's way at the moment", Cal Fire Battalion Chief Jonathan Cox said. The Anaheim Fire Department said the burst was being pushed by 25 miles per hour winds.

A smoke advisory has been issued for San Francisco, telling residents to "close windows and limit outdoor activities".

Officials said Sonoma County emergency dispatchers were being "overwhelmed by 911 calls" from residents smelling smoke, adding, "Please only call 911 if you see actual unattended flames".
