Letter: Columbus Day should be a national holiday

Editorial: Statues Of Limitations

In 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed Columbus Day a federal holiday after intense lobbying by a Catholic service organization consisting largely of Italian Americans, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Berkeley, Calif., and South Dakota became the first city and state, respectively, to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous People's Day in the 1990s.

Meanwhile 35,000 people are expected to march in today's Columbus Day parade in NY.

Debbie Deputat, president of the Tewksbury Sons of Italy, said they have no problem with Indigenous Peoples' Day landing on another day.

However, not everyone in Utah is happy about it.

Myself an Italian-American, I've always found it unusual that so many other Italians look to Columbus as the standard bearer of Italian pride.

More than 3,000 people RSVP'ed for the Indigenous Peoples Day event on the group's Facebook page, but an organizer pointed out that many of them are not local.

Project Loon balloons, from Google's Alphabet, to aid Puerto Rico
It was the strongest hurricane to hit the USA in over a century and the 155mph winds left Puerto Rico entirely without power. But there are limitations, she said Saturday.

Barron described Columbus as a "colonizer" who "enslaved Africans and slaughtered indigenous people". When native populations were all but extinct from disease, the trans-Atlantic African slave trade was ramped up to fill this slavery void.

If you ask a New Yorker which monuments symbolize an immigrants introduction to this country, they'll quickly note two famous statues: the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, and the statue of Columbus atop the landmark circle that bears his name.

Many cities and a few states across the country have chosen to recognize the holiday as Indigenous Peoples Day instead, honoring the tribes that lived on this land before Christopher Columbus arrived.

But not so fast, argue advocates of Indigenous Peoples Day, who say that Columbus was far from a hero.

While many schoolchildren learn about the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa Maria, less appealing details of Columbus' journeys include the enslavement of Native Americans and the spread of deadly diseases. "And to take the identity of Italian Americans away is ridiculous", he said.

"The implementation of Indigenous Peoples' Day has created feelings of pride, heritage and education about what truly happened (because of) Columbus", Frazer said. Even in recent years, historians have published new books about the ways Columbus impacted the modern world.

It has been tradition for years to celebrate their nationality on Columbus Day, stressed Tony Ippolito. One of them was Los Angeles.
