British PM May's Keynote Party Speech Interrupted by Prankster

Divisions over the future of May was made public on Friday with a former chairman of her party saying 30 Conservative members of parliament backed a plot to topple her.

Nadine Dorries, an ally of Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who has been the subject of speculation about a potential leadership bid amid his perceived disloyalty over Brexit in recent weeks, claimed Mr Shapps was part of a group of Remain-backing MPs seeking to reverse the decision to quit the EU.

"I think she should call a leadership election", Shapps told BBC Radio 5 live.

The Herald says a major security review is under way after a prankster was able to lunge towards Theresa May with a P45 as she delivered her keynote speech at the conference in Manchester.

He said he had previously informed No 10 that a growing number of Tory MPs were keen to have a leadership election.

'Now what the country needs is calm leadership, and that's what I am providing with the full support of my Cabinet, ' she said.

On Wednesday the country watched on in amazement as Theresa May's highly-anticipated speech to the Conservative Party conference descended into farce.

May's speech was also marred by a comedian - who mid-way handed her a P45 (better known as the letter of termination of employment) - and letters falling off the bold slogan behind her.

"Boris told me to hand her a P45", he told Reuters.

Grant Shapps, identified as the ringleader of the effort to oust May after a faltering performance at the party's conference this week and cabinet infighting over Brexit, said there was growing momentum behind the calls for her to step down.

Shapps said in media interviews: "I believe Theresa May is very decent person and unfortunately fought an election that didn't work out".

"She showed an unbelievable degree of resilience and courage this week, of a piece with the fantastic leadership she has shown through the time that she has been Prime Minister".

"In light of this we will be reviewing the accreditation process with the Conservative Party".

The prime minister is struggling to reassert her authority after she gambled on an early election in June.

One senior Conservative said May must show "personality, vision and confidence" in her speech and offer "delegates hungry for ideas" something new.

Also in the speech was a pledge that the Prime Minister would make housing her personal "mission" in office, and that the Government would put 2bn into affordable homes which councils and housing associations could bid for. She lacks the icy determination of Margaret Thatcher and the marketing savvy of ex-Labour leader Tony Blair, but Mrs.
