People placed flowers outside polling stations which had been sites of violent clashes during the vote
Manresa told Spanish news website La Vanguardia that the "ploy" was an attempt to avoid the violence that occurred at polling places in other towns across Catalonia.
Nick said: "They are absolutely panic-stricken that if Catalonia spins out of Spain the Basque region will spin out of Spain, Bavaria will spin out of Germany, Silesia will spin out of Poland - you haven't got an European Union anymore". On Wednesday, Puigdemont had called for global mediation to begin the process; however, he also remarked that the referendum's results should be acknowledged.
Instead, the European Commission has expressed its "trust (in) the leadership of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to manage this hard process in full respect of the Spanish Constitution and of the fundamental rights of citizens enshrined therein".
The head of the main Catalan business lobby, Joaquim Gay de Montella, said unilateral independence would be "a mistake for the Catalan and Spanish economy and business in general". "Each week, after every mistake, we've gained support from society", Puigdemont added.
The results announced by the Catalonian government indicated that 90 percent of voters were in favor of independence, but some have noted that this was virtually impossible to confirm as there was no official registry for voters and the counting was carried out in less-than-ideal circumstances.
The figures suggest that the turnout was about 43%, as many Catalans who oppose independence boycotted the poll for fear of lending it legitimacy. Separatist Catalans have long complained of contributing too much to the state while not getting enough in return.
Spain's constitution determines that the majority which counts is Spain as a whole, not Catalonia's 5.3 million voters. "On Sunday we had a referendum under the most hard circumstances and set an example of who we are".
The violence we witnessed following Catalonia's referendum vote this weekend was terrifying, but it can and should be a lesson for the world about the importance of upholding the spirit of democracy and the protection of human rights.
Turkey, which condemned last week's referendum for Kurdish independence in northern Iraq, also spoke of the importance of respecting Spanish law and territorial integrity.
"When Rajoy appears on television, I don't see him as my (leader), he doesn't represent me", said 58-year-old Elvira Ramisa in Sant Pere as her kitchen's radio blared out news on the referendum's aftermath.
What that independence declaration will actually mean for the prosperous region - and how Spain, the European Union and the global community will react - are all big unknowns.
The EU executive has called again for the Spanish government and Catalan authorities to start dialogue.

Philadelphia Eagles defense hangs on - again
The offense is bailing out the defense, the defense is bailing out the offense, and special teams sometimes bails out everybody. It's exactly the impact play the Chargers were banking on when they gave Ingram a four-year deal potentially worth $66 million.
