Pakistan daily, Dawn, reported that on Monday the ruling PML-N has cleared the way for Sharif to be re-elected as the party president.
The Supreme Court had disqualified Sharif, 67, as prime minister on July 28 in the Panama Papers case and ordered the NAB to file corruption and money laundering references against the Sharif family and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar in the light of the Joint Investigation Team's report. "He will become party president tomorrow, God willing", Chaudhry said.
Earlier on Sept 22, the Senate had passed the Election Bill 2017 with a majority vote, doing away with a clause which barred a person from serving as an office-bearer of a political party if he is either not qualified to be, or disqualified from being elected as a member of a parliament under Article 63 of the Constitution.
Ousted Pakistan prime minister will be present during his indictment proceedings in the court in Islamabad, his party said. He said PML-N was facing the cases in the courts and did not ran away like the dictator.
Khan said Sharif was battling to assert "civilian supremacy" and boost democracy in a nation that has been beset by military interference in politics.
The intra-party election is being held after the National Assembly on Monday passed the Elections Bill 2017, paving way for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to regain chairmanship of the ruling party.
Besides Nawaz, his children Hussain, Hassan and Maryam, and son-in-law Mohammad Safdar, are also accused of corruption. The army denies playing a role.
Pakistan's National Accountability Bureau is set to indict former prime minister in the accountability court in three corruption and money laundering cases involving his family's offshore properties on Monday.
Iqbal, visibly angry, threatened to resign in protest.
The daily said that Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal lashed out against the decision by the Rangers to not allow anybody in.
"Two states can not function in one state", he said.
