Violent crime rising throughout US, FBI says
By violent crime offense, the arrest rate for murder and nonnegligent manslaughter was 3.7 per 100,000 inhabitants; rape (aggregate total using the revised and legacy definition), 7.3; robbery, 29.8; and aggravated assault, 119.0 per 100,000 inhabitants.
But it's not all good news, violent crime is up.
The only category that showed a decrease in the city a year ago was reports of rape, which fell by 5.69 percent. President Trump earlier this year falsely claimed the US murder rate had surged to its highest level in almost 50 years. Among key national trends reported by the agency include a 4.1 increase in violent crime and a roughly 1.3 percent decrease in property crime compared to 2015.
"The overall picture is that homicide and violent crime rates went up dramatically in the 1970s and '80s and '90s, and then underwent a dramatic drop in the last 20 years, and leveled off", said Robert Weisberg, a Stanford University criminal law professor and co-director of the school's Criminal Justice Center. The Northeast saw the lowest crime rates of any region in the country in 2016, and CT had the fifth lowest violent crime rate in the nation in 2016.
He pointed to previous Federal Bureau of Investigation data from 2005 and 2006, when the violent crime rates ticked up after steady declines.
Violent crime rose for the second year in row nationally with a 4.1 percent jump.
Each crime report is broken down by location, agency, or the like, and contains several statistics reports.
Sessions said the country needed to "dismantle criminal organizations and gangs, stop the scourge of drug trafficking, and send a strong message to criminals that we will not surrender our communities to lawlessness and violence". In 1991, for instance, the violent crime rate was 758.2 per 100,000 people, and the murder rate was 9.8 per 100,000 people, after which both numbers began to fall, albeit with some year-over-year increases.
Pfaff warned against assuming that traditional tough-on-crime responses are the answer, nothing that while New York state has the longest sustained period of de-emphasizing incarceration, homicides in New York City were down five percent.
Martin said, "It's important to remember that overall, the vast majority of this country is safe, and equally important not to let the inevitable fearmongering from the Jeff Sessions, the Donald Trumps, and all the other enemies of progress paint these problems as a crime wave epidemic". On top of homicides, Chicago also saw increases in 2016 in robberies, aggravated assaults, burglaries and motor vehicle thefts over the previous year.
