Intel Announces 8th Generation Core i7, i5, And i3 Processors For Desktops

Intel targets high-end gamers with 8th-generation desktop chips coming Oct. 5

This new 8 Gen family line-up introduces the world's first-ever 6-core Intel Core i5 desktop processor and first-ever 4-core Intel Core i3 desktop processor.

Featuring what Intel calls its 'best gaming processor ever,' the 8th Generation Core processor range includes new options for multiple cores in mainstream desktops: The new Core i3 range includes the first quad-core processor to bear the name, while the new Core i5 range adds the first six-core chip.

With Intel Core X-series Extreme Edition processors, content creators can expect up to 80 percent better performance for VR content creation1 and up to 60 percent faster 4K video editing2 over the previous generation's Extreme Edition.

Intel is claiming its flagship Core i7-8700K is its "best gaming desktop processor ever", capable of the company's highest frequency ever using Intel's Turbo Boost 2, giving a smooth 4.7 GHz maximum single-core turbo frequency. The processor will be available on the 5th October with pricing to be announced soon. AMD's Ryzen 5 1400 should compare well against the Core i3-8750K but the Ryzen 3 1300X may be outclassed by the less-expensive Core i3-8100.

Intel 8th-Gen Core processors launched
Pricing has been a big sticking point for the rumour mill, and AMD backed Intel into a corner with Ryzen's higher core counts. The 8th-gen "Intel Core" unlocked "K" processors will overclock to higher levels than prior generations.

Meanwhile, the company also launched its new Z370 chipset motherboard along with the processors, which Intel said delivers improved power for six-core processors, memory routing support for DDR4-2666, and enhanced package power delivery for overclocking.

More on Intel's Core i9 Extreme processors here, which are sure to be X-tremely X-pensive as was the case with Intel's range of "extreme" class processors from years past. While lower-end i3 CPUs have usually featured hyper-threading, this time around, Intel has chose to ditch it in favor of the updated core counts.

According to Intel, 8th-gen Core CPUs allow for up to 25 percent better framerates on graphically rich games such as Gears of War 4 compared to 7th-gen core CPUs. The 8700k offers slightly more TDP to work with than the chip's predecessors did. AMD gets a larger benefit out of SMT than Intel does, but this will be a tough fight. Price has also taken a hit, the Core i7 8700K now costs about $55 more than the Core i7 7700K and the Core i5 8600K about $40 more than the Core i5 7600K. Also coming with Coffee Lake-S are the new Z370 motherboards.

Intel have managed to keep increases to the TDP of Coffee Lake processors to a minimum despite the increase in core counts across the board.
