Charles Bradley Dies After Cancer Battle (1948-2017)

Soul singer Charles Bradley died today after after succumbing to the stomach cancer he was diagnosed with last fall, according to his publicist.

However, the cancer recently returned, spreading to his liver, and he cancelled tour dates earlier this month. He was 68 years old.

He released three albums, No Time For Dreaming, Victim of Love, and Changes.

A Florida native, Bradley as a teenager in NY discovered soul legend James Brown at the Apollo Theater and later found a career as an impersonator. "And I left", he said in a 2013 interview. "This is a whole new turning point in my life". From there he headed west, working odd jobs and seeking out chances to sing.

Bradley spent his younger years battling homelessness and poverty, but later found success as a James Brown impersonator by the name of Black Velvet.

A statement from Bradley's spokesperson thanked fans for their support. People come to the front of the stage, and they whisper in my ear and tell me about their personal lives. His pain was a cry for universal love and humanity.

Musicians around the music world lamented his passing. I told him as much a few days ago. "I mean that literally, and anyone that ever saw him knows that he honestly tried".
