The Sri Lankan Tamils, who fled their country to escape persecution by the government forces when the island nation was battling with the LTTE insurgency, were classified as "camp refugees" and "non-camp refugees". It says the Rohingya can not use the 1951 Refugee Convention or the 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees since India was not a signatory to either.

President Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday said that the Centre has no legal leg to stand on over the Rohingya refugees' issue in view of the Supreme Court ruling that refugees are entitled to fundamental rights under the Constitution.
