Addressing a press conference in Srinagar top security force heads told reporters that the encounter ensued after a joint team of Police and 50 RR cordoned off the area following inputs about the presence of terrorists.

The commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and the main accused of Amarnath attack was killed in a brief gunbattle with security forces in Aarigam area of Nowgam on the outskirts of Srinagar on Thursday, said the police.

According to sources, the police had information that the terrorists were holed up in a house in Arigam and launched an operation to neutralise them.

The Indian authorities said they had been closing in on Abu Ismail in recent days.

Residents of that area said the firing had lasted just around 10 minutes, which shows that this was a well-planned neutralization. The attack was on a bus of Amarnath pilgrims and eight people died in that attack.

Sharing the details of the operation, he revealed that two AK-47 rifles were recovered from the killed terrorists.

"We are going after the militant leadership as eliminating the leadership is important". He was involved in around 15 criminal cases in the valley which included murder, dacoities and other militancy related incidents.

"To us, this operation is extremely important because Ismail was directly responsible for the killing of 14 security force personnel, 8 civilians and injured of many people", he said. "Now, we are looking at a serious deficiency in their leadership which should give us more opportunities", he said. "Our targets are only those who aid and assist India in crushing this freedom struggle", Askari said.
