IOC President Thomas Bach and LA Mayor Eric Garcetti hold signed host city contract

Paris and Los Angeles emerged from the initial bidding race for the 2024 Games after a number of cities withdrew, citing waning public support and concerns over budget.

Both Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028 officials expressed their excitement at the decision to award their cities the Olympic Games.

The AP adds this will be the third Olympics for both cities, and the Los Angeles games will be the first Summer Olympiad in the US since 1996.

IOC President Thomas Bach-a driving force behind the decision to confirm 2024 and 2028 at the same time-hailed the joint award as a "win-win-win".

"Bringing the Olympics back home to LA gives us the chance to imagine what our city will look like a decade from now", said Eric Garcetti, Mayor of Los Angeles.

After Bach called for a show of hands to approve the dual award, dozens of arms shot skyward from the audience; moments later, Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo stood next to the International Olympic Committee president dabbing tears from her eyes.

The IOC members at the 131st IOC Session unanimously approved a so-called tripartite agreement between the cities and the IOC by a show of hands to settle the double awarding, instead of voting for a city in a secret ballot as in the past. "Usually, we have two or three cities crying in a corner, and one glorious victory". The wait was much longer than Los Angeles, the French city hosted its last Olympics back in 1924. This paved the way for Paris as the sole 2024 bidder to win the Games unopposed.

All Blacks expect huge test from resurgent Boks
The All Blacks had to come from 17-0 down to beat Australia in their last match and they were given another scare by the winless Pumas, who held a 22-15 second-half advantage.

It will be the third time that Los Angeles hosts the Olympics, with the first two happening in 1932 and 1984.

In this never-before-seen style of selection, Bach asked the 94 International Olympic Committee members to allow the real contests to play out at the Olympics themselves and transform the vote from a game of sorts into a pure business decision.

IOC chief Bach meanwhile said the Olympic movement had secured the result "we were looking for".

Parisians celebrate winning the 2024 Olympics bid.

"Today, LA 2028 is taking the final step in our bid, and preparing to begin our 11-year journey as an Olympic host city", Garcetti said.

It wasn't such a bad idea considering the news still seeping out about a bid scandal involving a Brazilian IOC member's alleged vote-selling to bring the 2016 Olympics to Rio de Janeiro.

"Few governments want to risk the billions in cost overruns that have become synonymous with recent Olympics".
