Ambulances on the way to Freeman High School in Rockport Wash. where a shooting was reported Sept. 13 2017
On Wednesday, a student at Freeman High School opened fire, killing one and wounding three, according to the Spokane County Sheriff's Office.
"Today that student came to school, armed".
"He proceeded to take his weapons out", Knezovich said.
According to Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich, the student killed in the shooting tried to stop the shooter from carrying out his attack. A student walked up to him, engaged him, and that student was shot. Moore added that all three would stay at the hospital through Wednesday night.
All schools in the Spokane district were placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.
The Spokesman-Review says first responders are at Freeman High School in Rockford responding to the shooting.
Local television stations showed the school surrounded by police and fire vehicles, parents running the scene. The two-lane road into town was clogged as people sped to the school.
Elisa Vigil, 14, told Spokesman-Review reporter Jonathan Glover that the shooting unfolded in the freshman hallway on the second floor of the high school.
The mother of two students at the nearby middle school told the paper that the high school had staged a lockdown drill just the day before.
Spokespeople at a local hospital said three patients from the shooting were in stable condition. Classrooms were then searched at the high school before Chief Schaeffer announced the threat eliminated.
Describing the carnage, a witness was quoted in the media as saying, "I was putting my backpack away and I heard a loud pop, and I turned around".
"I believe that what that'll do is help deter some of these potential killers from trying to commit crimes here in Arkansas", said Rep. Charlie Collins, (R) District 84.
"He was handing out notes to his friends and it said that he was going to do something stupid that might either get him killed or in jail", said student Michael Harper. "You never think about something happening like this at a small school". Since August, advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety has found reports of school shootings in Lithia Springs, Georgia; Nashville, Tennessee; North Little Rock, Arkansas; Columbus, Ohio; and St. Paul, Minnesota.
