Google Appeals Record EU Antitrust Fine
This appeal is not suspensive; Google will therefore have to pay the fine.
The Commission told Google to stop displaying its shopping service so prominently at the top of search results by September 28, saying it is an abuse of power.
A spokesman for Google confirmed Monday they had filed the appeal but said the company had no further comment to make.
Following the ruling, Google said it "respectfully" disagreed and was considering whether to appeal.
"Instead, Google abused its market dominance as a search engine by promoting its own comparison shopping service in its search results, and demoting those of competitors", she said.
Final: Pittsburgh Steelers defeat Cleveland Browns 21-18 When the drive stalled at the Pittsburgh six-yard line, Gonzalez converted the first field goal attempt of his career. The second Roethlisberger-to-James touchdown combination of the day gave the Steelers a 21-10 lead over the Browns.
A court battle between Brussels and Google could take years to resolve and adds to an increasingly bitter row between the U.S. giant and European countries.
"The commission will defend its decision in court", a spokesperson for the commission said. Google has previously said it disagreed with the European Union decision and had indicated it would file an appeal. "It denied other companies the chance to compete on the merits and to innovate".
The commission's fine of €2,424,495,000 was said to take into account the "duration and gravity of the infringement", and was based on Google's revenue from its comparison shopping service in the 13 countries where the illegality occurred.
The EU Court of Justice (ECJ) ordered a lower tribunal last week to re-examine USA chipmaker Intel's appeal against a 1.06 billion euro fine, a rare setback for the Commission. These concern the contracts for its AdSense advertising service and the licensing of its Android mobile phone operating system.
