It is important that the police conduct a time-bound probe, so that the facts about the murder can be unearthed, and all the questions answered: Who killed Lankesh, and who ordered the killing? The members of Goa Writers have announced plans to commemorate and discuss the life work of Gauri Lankesh at the annual Arts and Literature Festival in December, of which the group is co-organiser.
A silent march condemning her killing was organised by Press Club of Mumbai on Wednesday and supported by other organisations such as TV journalist Association, Mantralaya Journalist Association and Crime Journalist Association, among others.
Several people condemned the incident on social media, but a few posted hateful comments and justified Lankesh's murder. "It is the responsibility of the Karnataka government to maintain law and order".
Speaking to the press later, Rahul said he had spoken to the Karnataka CM and told him that the people who did this must be caught and punished. An outspoken critic of Hindutva politics, Lankesh, 55, was shot dead by assailants at the entrance of her residence in Rajrajeshwari Nagar in Bengaluru last evening.
Chennai journalists gathered at the Press Club to condemn the murder. "It is a sad reminder of danger the journalists facing from anti progressive forces", he said.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar described Lankesh as the voice of liberal media and demanded that the culprits must be booked. A joint memorandum, submitted to the Karnataka Chief Minister, sought speedy investigation and noted that the murder had sent "shock waves across the journalist community for its brazenness".
Union Minister H.N. Ananth Kumar said it was for the Congress government in Karnataka to "seriously" probe the case and nab the culprits.
The SIO Bhatkal unit in the presence of their unit president Zuhair SM and Secretary Abud Asif submitted an memorandum to the Governor of the state through Bhatkal Assistant commissioner (AC) demanding a quick and fair investigation of the case.
