Senior Journalist Gauri Lankesh Murdered At Her Residence In Bengaluru

An Indian journalist was fatally shot Tuesday by unidentified attackers in the southern Indian city of Bangalore, police said.

Gauri Lankesh was known for her anti-establishment, pro-poor and pro-Dalit stand. "We are taking the movements of people and vehicles at check posts and inter-state borders", Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) M.N. Anucheth told IANS here.

Gauri was previous year convicted in a defamation case filed by BJP lawmaker Prahlad Joshi over a report published in her tabloid against some leaders of the party.

Born in 1962, Ms Lankesh was the older daughter of P Lankesh, who edited Kannada weekly tabloid "Lankesh Patrike" for two decades since 1980.

"Ministry of Home Affairs has asked for a report from the Karnataka government on the killing of senior journalist Gauri Lankesh", said Home Ministry official.

Siddaramaiah also told media that "Police has formed three teams and begun investigations".

Gauri Lankesh, 55, was sacked upon Tuesday evening outside her residence in Bengaluru, the capital city of Karnataka.

"I have spoken with the DGP (Director General of Police), and instructed him to ensure prompt and thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice", Siddaramaiah said on Twitter.

Rahul Gandhi tweeted, "Anybody who speaks against ideology of BJP-RSS is pressured, beaten, attacked and even killed".

Lankesh was a member of the Karnataka government's Naxal Panel in 2016 to help reformed Naxals surrender before the police.
