Justin Thomas shares lead heading into final round in Boston

Thomas finally had 'total control' of his game

Justin Thomas of the United States stands with caddie Jimmy Johnson on the 13th hole during the final round of the Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston in Norton, Massachusetts, on Monday.

It was a disappointing finish to say the least but Leishman took it in his phlegmatic way; he has two more tournaments to play and with high stakes, and he had spent the day trading blows with the best the game has to offer.

Spieth, too, wilted on the back nine after having a shot at beating his good friend Thomas.

The victory was Thomas' fifth of the 2016-'17 season and second in his last three starts. Anytime any of my friends win and I don't, I'm extremely happy for them, I'm pumped for them, I'm excited.

"My long irons got off", he said.

Leishman faltered early on the back nine.

The Australian hit 17 straight greens in regulation until the 18th. I wish that I holed out a bunker shot at Travelers to win, whatever.

Even though he started with a share of the lead, Thomas spent much of the day a shot off the pace as Spieth was 5-under through four following a birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie start in the group immediately ahead of him and Leishman birdied four of the first five. "That one was a tough one because I really did a good job".

Thomas finally had 'total control' of his game

"Definitely jealousy. I still get jealous", Thomas said.

"I was a sore loser, so I was just angry".

Though it may seem odd at times, it's refreshing to see rivals battle without the need to spike the ball in the other's face or beat their chest after beating the other man as if they'd just become king of the jungle. I saw it land in the grass and just popped up and went down. "I didn't think anything was going wrong", Spieth said. Thomas was outside the top 15 in strokes gained with the driver at TPC Boston, but made up for it with his putting, where he finished inside the top five. And remember, Jack Nicklaus also racked up a few second-place finishes-58, with 73 TOUR wins-while piling up those 18 major victories.

"No, I thought I had good chances". "I still get jealous".

"Obviously a dream start, and then you're not going to keep pace and shoot, you know, 54", said Spieth, who dropped an overtime decision to Johnson last week on Long Island. "Eight, I hit a great putt". I only had two bogeys this week and I'm probably just as proud of that as I am winning. "I wasn't trying to send a statement", he told the Golf Channel.

Things would change dramatically over the final nine holes however as first Leishman, then Spieth, began to falter, Leishman with bogeys at his opening three holes of the homeward nine to allow Spieth to take the lead through 13 holes but soon Spieth would open to door for Thomas.

England's Paul Casey is alone in third after shooting a four-under 67 while world No. 2 Jordan Spieth shot a 66 and is tied with Grayson Murray (67) and Canada's Adam Hadwin (68) for fourth on 10 under. It was Mickelson's first top 10 since June, but it may have been enough to earn a captain's pick from Steve Stricker on Wednesday for one of the final two U.S. Presidents Cup spots.
