After a mission of 288 days, the NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson has made Sunday stis return to Earth from the worldwide space Station (ISS) aboard a Soyuz with an american colleague and a Russian.

Russian Fyodor Yurchijin and Americans Jack Fischer and Peggy Whitson, members of 52nd expedition to the ISS, landed at 7.21 a.m., near a remote area in Dzhezkazgan, reports Efe news.

Whitson touched down in Kazakhstan at 9:21 p.m. EDT on Saturday aboard a Soyuz capsule.

"This is the estimated re-entry time", the official said.

A 57-year-old, Peggy Whitson is also the woman astronaut the oldest in the history of space exploration, and the first woman to have been at the controls of the worldwide space Station.

Whitson's 665 days off the planet - 288 days on this mission alone - exceeded the duration time of any other American astronaut, and any other woman astronaut worldwide.

Whitson's return to Earth wrapped up a record-breaking flight that placed her in first place for U.S. space endurance.

NASA's Jack Fischer completed his rookie spaceflight accumulating 136 days in space aboard the ISS.

Russian search and recovery forces quickly arrived via a cluster of MI-8 helicopters after the soft landing to begin their normal procedures to extract the three crew members from the Soyuz.

While aboard ISS, Whitson executed four spacewalks.
