The Hitman's Bodyguard maintained top spot with $10 million, while Leap! debuted in third with half the takings. The fourth film in the "Conjuring Universe" made about $2.5 million from 3,565 theaters on Friday. It could even be the lowest since September 21, 2001, which accrued $59 million in the wake of the World Trade Center terrorist attacks.

The movie business is hurting. This month is running 34 percent behind August of past year. Next week is expected to be just as bad: No new wide releases are scheduled for Labor Day weekend. Two weeks ago The Nut Job 2 took that spot, having opened in cinemas that weekend to $8.3 million.

In second place, Warner Bros.

The runner-up also remained the same as the horror thiller, Annabelle: Creation, took in $7 million. "Leap!" brought in an estimated $5 million in its box-office debut.

How to Watch the 'Game of Thrones' Season 7 Finale
You can choose the channel depending on your needs from Sky Sports, Sky Cinema, and others on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. On August 10 Proofpoint detected malicious email messages (Figure 1) purporting to contain unreleased Game of Thrones content.

"It's a black eye for Hollywood but not a knock-out punch", said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore. If Hollywood wants to take a weekend off from releasing new movies, then that's fine. There have been similarly slow weekends in recent years, including early September in 2014 and in 2016. ComScore estimates that this will be the first summer in a decade not to cross $4 billion in domestic ticket sales. Instead, mediocre offerings were largely to blame.

On another slow late-summer weekend at multiplexes, The Hitman's Bodyguard took its second straight box office crown, once again pretty much by default. Exceeding all expectations, the screening grossed $2.59 million ($4,884 PTA), enough to land it at the number eight spot ahead of new release Birth of the Dragon ($2.5 million on 1,618 screens). The film's $15 million two-week total, though, isn't the movie industry game-changer its makers hoped it would be. Its three-week tally now stands at $77.8 million. Where available, the latest global numbers also are included.

However, that figure could drop down to somewhere in the $9 million range when final figures are released.
