US Navy to remove commander of 7th Fleet amid latest accidents

Remains found on US warship that collided off Singapore, US Navy says (VIDEO)

The removal of Vice Adm. Joseph Aucoin comes after Sunday's collision between the McCain and an oil tanker became the fourth in a series of warship accidents that have raised questions about usa naval operations in the Pacific.

The U.S. Navy will relieve Seventh Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin after a series of collisions involving its warships in Asia, a U.S. official told Reuters, as the search goes on for 10 sailors missing since the latest mishap.

"One tragedy like this is one too many, and while each of these four events is unique, they can not be viewed in isolation".

Andrew Tan, the chief executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, said about 250 people from various Singapore agencies were involved in the search. Swift says bodies were discovered but it's premature to say how many or the status of their recovery.

He said the Navy will carry out a "deliberate re-set" of all its ships in the Pacific, focused on navigation, mechanical systems and bridge resource management. In June, the USS Fitzgerald collided with a container ship off the coast of Japan.

Speaking at WEST 2017, a conference co-sponsored by the U.S. Naval Institute, Aucoin said: "We hope that North Korea abides by the United Nations Security Council resolution to stop development of nuclear weapons, but I'm not holding my breath on that regard".

The destroyer is now at the Changi naval base in Singapore.

HS: Turku terror suspect to have detention hearing on Tuesday
Police believe that the attack was conducted to deliberately target women, but no group has come forward to take responsibility. All of the victims were women, including the two dead, except for two men who tried to fend off the attacker.

And Darryl Smith, the father of Kenneth Smith, an electronics technician petty officer 3rd class, said in a separate statement provided by the Navy that he was waiting for news about his son.

The Navy declined to confirm names of the missing sailors, but, by Tuesday, some of their relatives had begun to identify them. He served aboard the USS McCain since October.

"The concern the Navy has is that the Japan force, because it is the most highly stressed, is the canary in the coal mine", he said.

Navy Vice Admiral Aucoin was removed on Wednesday - two days after the USS John S McCain was damaged in a collision with an oil tanker.

He added that, right now, the Navy has no indication that an intentional action was the cause. It is the largest of the U.S. Navy's forward deployed fleets and consists of 50-70 ships and submarines and around 20,000 sailors.

Navy mishaps often emerge from judgment calls: A commanding officer, or CO, misjudges which young officers or sailors are ready to stand a crucial watch by themselves, putting people into positions of authority who aren't ready.
