A woman listening to her
Firstly, the coding revealed that you'll be able to ask the headphones questions, give them commands and that they'll always be ready to help. The Google app was recently updated and some devs happened to check the code and saw some reference to a smart assistant for the headphones. In a bid to compete against Apple's AirPods, Google could be working on its own smart headphones, if a recent report is to be believed. There's not much else to glean from details scraped from the beta of an app, but there is a reference to a Google Assistant button on the left earcup, which suggests we're talking about over-ear headphones rather than earbuds. The first string says, " Your headphones have the Google Assistant. At that time, it was speculated as portable audio device. "It's your own personal Google, always ready to help". The device will be able to read notifications, and users will be able to access the Google Assistant and ask questions, similar to the way they can do with their phone, or a Google Home speaker. Most importantly, according to the report, these headphones would be capable of getting over-the-air software updates. Instead, they appear to be over-the-ear devices with external buttons that can perform a variety of functions (think accepting calls, skipping songs, and the like).

Now it's looking even more likely Google plans on going all-in on hardware. Speculations are rife that the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 smartphones would be unveiling in October this year. The same source who tipped off Android Police to the existence of a mini Google Home is confident that the company will be announcing a follow-up to the Chromebook Pixel very soon. More information on the rumored headphones from Google are expected to emerge in the coming weeks.
