Qualcomm announces next-generation Spectra camera technology
17 August 2017, 02:00 | Denise Dawson
As for availability, Qualcomm is expected to be a part of the next flagship Snapdragon Mobile Platform.
While the previous modules were focused on low-light photography, with new modules Qualcomm is bringing iris authentication module for better biometric authentication, new camera modules, and AR smarts.
The low-power, high-performance motion tracking capabilities of the QualcommSpectra ISP, in addition to optimized simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms, are created to support new extended reality (XR) use cases for virtual and augmented reality applications that require SLAM. Also mentioned is that the new ISPs and camera modules will support better image quality and new computer vision, which will use deep learning techniques and make image processing faster.
And while the image was shot exclusively from above the player's hands, the Qualcomm reps were then able to rotate the video to reveal that the depth-sensing camera was able to capture the player and keyboard in a almost complete 3D image. See, with more accurate depth-sensing technologies, augmented reality - think "Pokémon Go" and the like - will see drastic improvements.
The passive depth sensor, meanwhile, uses two camera lenses to capture the same scene. The rumor mill is strong however, and Qualcomm is ready to stake its own claim in the functionality - so you shouldn't be surprised if we're all unlocking our new phones with our faces by this time next year.
Chelsea treating me like a criminal, says Costa Meanwhile, Gareth Barry was set to undergo a medical at West Bromwich Albion yesterday ahead of a proposed move from Everton . Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is keen on signing Torino forward Andrea Belotti once Diego Costa leaves the club this summer.
Known as "active depth sensing" it will use infrared light and shine it in a particular pattern so that a sensor can then measure the distortion in the pattern.
Those modules may highlight some of the changes Qualcomm has planned for its ISP, but they're not all the enhancements on tap for the next version of Spectra.
It's the pair of depth-sensing modules that have even greater implications for next year's phones and headsets, though.
That's where the active depth-sensing module comes in. This, according to Qualcomm, will have liveness detection feature as seen in some models like Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 plus. Qualcomm is also offering an iris-reading front-facing camera which can work through sunglasses.
