The news is headlined by a two-year problem report rate of 25%, suggesting that a quarter of all Surface owners will experience problems with their devices by their second year of ownership.
According to the Consumer Reports survey responses, the Microsoft devices were found to freeze, unexpectedly shut down or have issues with their touchscreens, Beilinson said.
In this case, Consumer Reports said the estimated breakage rate for Microsoft's products was higher than most other brands'.
"Every generation of Surface surpasses its predecessors in performance and in reliability", a Microsoft statement claims. Microsoft's hardware was found to be significantly more problematic than other manufacturers', although the group points out that devices such as the Surface Pro fare well in terms of performance. The last time Consumer Reports removed a recommendation for laptops was in 2015, when it turned a thumbs up into a thumbs down for three HP and one Lenovo laptop for reliability reasons, a spokesperson for Consumer Reports told The Register.

"Consumers tell us that reliability is a major factor when they're choosing a tablet or laptop", says Simon Slater, Consumer Reports' survey manager.
I know this will probably be an unpopular opinion here as well as a semi rare occurrence, but man I think this is a universal problem with Microsofts products. "We survey our subscribers every year about numerous products they own". It seems that the breakage rate was considerably higher compared to other brands. The power and form factor of Microsofts Surface line are almost unparalleled but if they can't consistently pump out devices that don't experience immediate defects past the normal wear and tear, I don't think their will be many people that remain loyal to the brand. It released its first Surface tablet just five years ago. Apple laptops and tablets came out on top in Consumer Reports' reliability surveys.
The testing process involves those individuals living with the products for several weeks, putting them through a string of tests using scientific measurements, as well as subjective tests that mimic the user experience.
Microsoft doesn't agree with Consumer Reports, but that doesn't surprise anyone.
