The vehicle, a dark BMW auto, hit the soldiers at Place de Verdun in Levallois-Perret at the northwestern edge of Paris on Wednesday at about 8:00 a.m. local time (0600 UTC).

A police operation was underway to find the auto and the driver involved in the incident, BBC reported.

He told news channel BFMTV that the auto "accelerated very fast when [the soldiers] were coming out" of the barracks.

Paris Six people were injured, two of them seriously, when a vehicle drove into a military patrol in a Paris suburb.

A police spokesman said on Twitter: "Police intervention is underway".

It targeted soldiers from the Sentinelle security force created after extremist attacks in 2015.

The incident occurred at the Place de Verdun in the north-western area of Levallois-Perret.

Today's attack is the latest in a long string of incidents that have been blighting the French capital.

One eyewitness, who gave her name as Zakia, told BFMTV that she was awakened by a "boom" before running to her balcony.

In February a man attacked four soldiers with a machete, while in April another fighter shot and killed a policeman while on duty at the Champs Elysees.

"I heard a loud sound, shouts".

The suspect was intercepted by the police on a motorway in northern France while driving the BMW which may have been used in the attack.

The Paris prosecutor's office said it was "pursuing perpetrators on charges of the attempted murder of security forces in connection with a terrorist enterprise".

Defense Minister Florence Parly condemned the attack, calling it "a cowardly act with the utmost firmness".

Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said after that attack in June that it had demonstrated the threat was still very high in the country and that it justified the ongoing state of emergency put in place in 2015. Operation Sentinelle guards major Parisian sites from terrorist attacks, such as the recent knife scare at the Eiffel Tower.
