Donald Trump struck a defiant stance against North Korea on Tuesday afternoon, warning of severe retribution should the authoritarian state proceed with any more missile tests or threats.
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 71 points, or 0.3 percent, to 22,013.
Politics also lifted USA defense stocks. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (COMP - 6,352.33) lost 18.1 points, or 0.3%.
The 10-day Dow winning streak that ended was the second double-digit string of up days this year - the first time that has happened since 1959. The stock was the biggest gainer in the S&P 500, adding $8.17 to $45.40.
Oil prices gained 32 cents to $49.49 USA per barrel. Watch maker Fossil Group plunged 25 percent after reporting a weak quarter. More than 70 percent of S&P 500 companies that had reported posted better-than-expected earnings while 69 percent have beaten of sales, according to data from Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. The stock fell 59 cents to $13.02. Netflix was down 1.8 percent.
ENERGY: Benchmark U.S. crude lost 23 cents to $48.94 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude, the global futures benchmark, declined 38 cents, or 0.7%, to $51.99 a barrel. Brent crude, the worldwide standard, lost 28 cents to $52.09 a barrel in London.

Wider Asian markets down: Japan's Nikkei stock index closed down 1.33%, the Hong Kong Hang Seng index is down 0.35%, and China's Shanghai Composite is down 0.28%.
