On Monday, July 31, OL Branden Albert informed Jaguars Head Coach Doug Marrone that he was stepping away from the team. Essentially, Jacksonville gave up a seventh-round pick so that Branden Albert could retire as a Jaguar.
The Jaguars are now in Foxborough, Massachusetts, for two days of joint practices with the New England Patriots, and a team spokesman said the team would not comment on the situation. He skipped most of Jacksonville's offseason program because he wanted a new contract.
Albert was due base salaries of $8.875 million in 2017 and $9.575 million in 2018. That's because he's actually reporting back to training camp even after announcing his abrupt retirement from the National Football League only several days earlier. Albert did participate in the team's mandatory three-day minicamp in mid-June and reported with the rest of the team's veterans on July 26.
Albert signed a five-year deal with the Miami Dolphins prior to the 2014 season. The Jaguars, however, would rather go with the younger, cheaper option at left tackle in rookie Cam Robinson. Albert worked with the first-team offense on the first day of camp but Robinson took reps there in the next two practices.
Albert, 32, has earned two trips to the Pro Bowl and remains one of the better pass-protecting left tackles in the NFL.
On an off day July 30 Albert talked with a teammate about the upcoming 2017 season, but the next day arrived at camp and told Doug Marrone the head coach that he made a decision to retire.
