Former high level UN official to address city peace event

Peace activists will remember Hiroshima, Nagasaki bombings, call for ban on nuclear weapons

No sitting United States president had ever visited this city, destroyed by an atomic bomb on August 6, 1945, in one of the final moves of World War II.

Participants at the ceremony, held at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, offered a minute of silence at 8:15 a.m., the exact time when the USA atomic bomb was dropped on the city on August 6, 1945.

A number of speakers also talked about the United Nations last month adopting an global treaty banning nuclear weapons.

Japan is the only country to have suffered atomic attacks.

Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui on this occasion urged that the absolute evil of atomic weaponry be banished.

Japan celebrated the 72nd anniversary of the Hiroshima nuclear bombing, the world's agencies said on Sunday.
