Gunman attacks southeast Nigeria church 8 killed

He extended his condolences to families of the victims, assuring them that the government would do everything within its power to track down those responsible.

The President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, has expressed sadness over the killing of some worshipers at St. Philip's Catholic Church, Ozubulu, Anambra, on Sunday.

"Our security forces must not stop until everyone involved in the orchestration and execution of today's massacre in St. Philip's Catholic Church is brought to book by the strong arm of justice". In frustration oddfor not finding their victim in church opened fire on other worshippers.

A witness, who simply identified herself as a choir member, said the gunman left immediately into a waiting vehicle with a driver.

He added that the remains of the dead had been deposited at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi.

She said that the generating set suddenly developed fault; so, the mass proceeded with the congregation using candle light.

Governor spokesman Umar Zwak said no security personnel was killed in the suicide auto bombing while some injured. He said one police officer was killed at the scene and another who was wounded died later in hospital.

Confirming the attack, Garba Umar, police chief in charge of the state told reporters that more details would be given after investigations, without revealing the exact number of people killed in the incident.

"My heart goes to the bereaved at this moment of pain".

He said the attack occurred at about 6:20am on Sunday.

There were conflicting reports over whether the attack was carried out by a lone gunman or a group of attackers.

In his reaction, Victor Oye, the National Chairman, All Progressives Grand Alliance, said no amount of provocation could justify the killing of innocent people who had gone to worship in a Church.

"This is sacrilegious, totally unacceptable in Anambra State", Obiano said.
