McConnell: Senate Will 'Defer' Vote On Republican Health Care Bill

Menendez speaks out against Medicaid cuts in new GOP health care plan

All would lose under GOP health care plan

US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Saturday the Senate would delay consideration of the Republican health care bill while Arizona Senator John McCain recovers from surgery.

McCain, 80, underwent surgery at the Mayo Clinic on Friday to remove a blood clot above his left eye.

McCain's absence raised doubts about whether Republican leadership would have enough votes to move past an important procedural hurdle, for which they will need 50 Republican senators to vote in support of taking up the bill. According to NPR, members of the Senate GOP had originally planned to vote on the bill before the Fourth of July holiday, but they delayed the vote when it appeared that about five Republican senators were opposed to the bill.

Two Republicans, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Susan Collins of ME, have already said they'll vote against the measure.

"There are about eight to 10 Republican senators who have serious concerns about this bill", Ms Collins told CNN's State of the Union programme, faulting the bill for its major cuts to Medicaid.

John Kennedy said the "unfair treatment" under McConnell's original bill would have cost the state $2 billion. But two Republican senators have already declared their opposition to revised legislation that was unveiled on Thursday. McCain is taking time to recover based on the advice of his doctors, the statement said.

But Democrats, who are powerless to stop the bill unless more Republicans defect, are gleefully seizing on the opportunity the delay provides to hammer their GOP colleagues for not holding a single public hearing on the massive legislation.

Strong storms cause flooding across Wisconsin
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Kenosha, as heavy rains are again expected in the area. The weather service has also issued a Flood Warning for the Fox River at Montgomery.

"It could lead to insurance plans that really are barely insurance at all".

The release detailed information regarding McCain's status and how the surgery went. As a result, McCain will remain home with his family in Arizona to recover over the next week.

That means for Lee "there can be a political benefit to opposing a bill that has extremely low levels of public support", Karpowitz said, even if he's attempting to act out of honest concerns over policy.

It would likely fail without Mr McCain's vote. Flake said. "I look forward to seeing him back at work soon".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has been meeting behind closed doors to adjust the legislation after being forced to abandon a vote last month amid a revolt within his party.

If I were McCain, I'd stay put in that hospital as long as possible.
