Panama Papers: Sharif's Next Move?

Naya Din

Speaking in a meeting on Tuesday night, Mr Sharif said he will challenge the final Panamagate report submitted by Joint Investigation Team (JIT) in the Supreme Court.

One of the most shocking discoveries was that the text in documents Maryam sent to the investigators, allegedly from 2006, was rendered in the "Calibri" font, which only became available on January 31, 2007, the report published by Express Tribune, says on page 54.

"Nawaz's authority is completely eroded", Shah Mehmood Qureshi, vice chairman of the opposition PTI party, told Reuters.

It is learnt that Sharif family's top counsel Khawaja Muhammad Haris has prepared a draft of objections on the JIT report, and it may be submitted [to the top court] on Saturday.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that governments had been toppled in the country on accusations of corruption and being a "security risk" in the past. Nawaz Sharif can retake the premiership after the decision of supreme court, advised Shehbaz Sharif according to sources who were present in the meeting. The report found major disparities in the money trail provided of the Sharif family's assets.

Tsai urges China to give Liu Xiaobo freedom to make medical choice
The German embassy in Beijing later said in a statement the recordings were made against the expressed wishes of the German side. If China were to release him, Jared Genser, a lawyer representing Liu internationally, said he was ready to evacuate him.

Prime Minister Sharif has denied all claims of wrongdoing, saying his family acquired all their wealth through legal means.

The meeting - the fourth high-level meeting in five days - was called amid reports of ruptures within the ranks of PML-N. Under scanner for the revelations in the Panama Papers story, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, daughter and political heir to Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, is in the eye of a storm created by a Microsoft Word typeface used in a document a good year before it's time. If three judges agree on the findings of the JIT, Nawaz Sharif could face possible disqualification. Another offshore company FZE Capital, which was managed by Nawaz Sharif until 2014, was also discovered.

Meanwhile, the PML-N's parliamentary leaders promised to stand by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif with millions of supporters and voters. Imran Khan, leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, and Bilawal Bhutto of the Pakistan Peoples Party have warned that democracy could be in danger if Mr. Sharif would not agree to step down.

The Sharifs claimed that the flats were purchased by a Qatari consortium in the 1990s and Mr. Sharif's sons took the ownership in 2006.

He had served as the prime minister from 1990 to 1993 and from 1997 to 1999.
