Marine Aircraft Disaster: 15 Marines, 1 Navy Corpsman Killed in Mississippi Crash
MS and federal officials say it could take up to one week to locate the remains of the 16 servicemen who were killed in the military plane crash earlier this week in rural LeFlore County.
A U.S. Marine from Frederick was among the 16 military personnel killed Monday when their plane went down in a northern MS soybean field.
Six of the Marines and the sailor were from the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, the post said.
The Marine Corps said the cause was under investigation and offered no information on whether the plane issued a distress call. "While the details of the incident are being investigated, our focus remains on providing the necessary resources and support to the family and friends of these service members as they go through this extremely hard time", the Marines said in a news release.
Brig. Gen. Bradley S. James says two main impact areas are separated by a mile, but smaller debris is scattered more widely. They were all killed when the KC-130 aircraft exploded and went down in a soybean field in Mississippi. "There is a large debris pattern", James said.
The air tanker was based at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, New York, and was on its way from a Marine installation at Cherry Point, North Carolina, to a naval air field at El Centro, California, when it went down, officials said. This incident is the deadliest military crash since 2005.
They were headed to Yuma, Arizona for pre-deployment training. The force of the crash almost flattened the plane, Jones said. "We all suffer the loss of any military member".
"Out of respect for the families, we will not release the names or specifics as of now; expect the roster of names within the next few days", James said.
"He was thinking of looking into that, but he said, 'You know, I've got some time, '" Johnson said.
