Former president Jimmy Carter, 92, 'taken offsite for observation' after he collapses from dehydration while working with Habitat for Humanity
Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter collapsed Thursday while at a Habitat for Humanity build site in Canada. The Elders said that Carter will remain affiliated with the group as an honorary, or emeritus, Elder starting June 1. "He has encouraged everyone to stay hydrated and keep building", a Habitat for Humanity spokesperson tells PEOPLE. They are working with the organization to build 150 homes this week.
Carter was in Canada working on the homes with his wife, Rosalynn, and Metro news reports, he was given an IV and taken to the hospital.
"Habitat for Humanity is the best way I've found in my life to put my Christian faith into action", President Carter told volunteers Thursday, according to a tweet from Reckford.
A spokesman for Habitat for Humanity told multiple media outlets that President Carter was taken to a hospital as a precaution, but has since told organizers he is feeling fine.
Carter, who left the White House in 1981, has often been spotted framing houses throughout the country for the last 35 years.
Carter, whose family had a history of cancer, disclosed in August 2015 that he had been diagnosed with melanoma, a form of skin cancer, that had spread to his brain and elsewhere and had been spotted during liver surgery.
