White House 'appoints' China's Xi President of Taiwan, Abe President of Japan in press release gaffe
The United States has apologized for mistakenly identifying Chinese President Xi Jinping as the leader of Taiwan in a statement, China's Foreign Ministry said Monday.
The error was made in an official readout of US President Trump's remarks before a bilateral meeting with Xi during last weekend's G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany. "But there will be success in the end one way or the other", Trump said.
While no note was made about the correction in the transcript, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a regular press conference in Beijing on Monday that the United States had admitted to China that it had made a "technical error and had fixed it" after Beijing asked for an explanation.
The President of Taiwan is Tsai Ing-wen, who is considered to be a competitor to Xi Jinping. They said such errors are not conducive to health US-China relations.
The issue is particularly sensitive because Beijing insists that Taiwan is part of its territory.
Wang Dong, an associate professor in the school of worldwide studies at elite Peking University, said he believes the error was not intentional but still reveals a lack of capacity in Trump's foreign policy team while key positions remain unfilled.
"It shows the deficiency in the professionalism on the part of the White House staff in terms of diplomacy", another expert, Wang Dong, an associate professor in the school of global studies at Peking University, added. And another White House statement called the prime minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, "President Abe of Japan".
Ties between China and the US have suffered because of the American relationship with Taiwan, particularly after President Trump spoke on the phone with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in a break from protocol shortly after his election to the White House.
Trump has come under fire for failing to fill thousands of slots in his administration, with his White House staff, in particular, being faulted for poor organizational skills.
Once dominant, the United States finds itself isolated at G-20
The Trump administration argues the USA has become too dependent upon foreign steel for its infrastructure and military equipment. They called the deal to reduce greenhouse gases "irreversible" and vowed to implement it "swiftly" and without exception.
