Pakistan Investigators Want Sharif Tried Over Unexplained Assets

In a meeting after the submission of final report regarding Panamagate probe in Supreme Court, top PML-N leadership has advised Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif not to resign, sources told ARY News on Monday.

"No argument or substantial martial is part of the report", said Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal while addressing a press conference. In the report submitted by JIT, it has been stated that Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan chairman Zafar Hijazi was involved in tampering records in order to favor Sharif's family.

However, the investigation of the JIT now proves that Maryam Nawaz Sharif lied in her statement and she actually is the beneficial owner of both Nescol and Nielson.

Embattled Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is facing graft allegations, today attacked his detractors, saying they are "hiding behind Panama Papers accountability" to oust him.

He said that the party's lawyers were analysing the report from every angle.

"Significant gap/disparity amongst the known and declared sources of income and the wealth accumulated by the Respondent No. 1, 6, 7 and 8 have been observed", the JIT observed in its concluding remarks.

The Supreme Court is due to review the findings and will convene a hearing into the allegations on July 17. "There are so many contradictions in this report anybody who reads it objectively will understand its true objective", he said.

Pakistan's Supreme Court took up the case on the petitions of opposition parties including Imran Khan's Tehrik-i-Insaf and others who sought disqualification of Nawaz Sharif for not declaring the money trail.

JIT can summon anyone to probe money-laundering charges against Sharif's family. He said Joint Investigation Team (JIT) should be asked about their findings. The assets in question are four apartments costing several million pounds in Park Lane, London, which according to Panama Papers were purchased through off shore companies Nielson and Nescol but hidden from tax authorities in Pakistan.

He also resorted to personal attacks against members of the JIT, accusing them of being anti-PML-N.

"There is no need of further trial or proceedings".
