Multiple sources are reporting that a SC prison officials suspect Jimmy Causey, a prisoner at the Lieber Correctional Institution, may have used a drone to fly in tools that enabled him to break out of the institution. "We started our count, and verified around 2 p.m. on the 5th that he was gone".

Prisoners have previously been caught receiving items from others that are delivered via drone, and now one prisoner has topped them all: he managed to escape from a maximum-security prison in sc thanks in part to a drone.

To escape his dorm, Causey fashioned a dummy and put it in his bed as a "ruse" for prison guards, according to SCDC Director Bryan Stirling, who also spoke during the presser.

When he was captured, Causey had four cell phones, a shotgun, a pistol and nearly $47,000 in cash with him. The inmate also placed a papier-mâché dummy in his bed, which gave him an 18-hour window to flee, according to WLTX. In his first escape, Causey and another inmate hid in a garbage truck leaving the Broad River Correctional Institution near Columbia.

Causey must have had help from others to make his escape, Stirling said.

'Everyone who assisted him -we intend on bringing them to justice as well, ' Keel said.

Causey was held in South Carolina's most secure, super-max facility in Columbia, after he was recaptured but he was eventually returned to the system's general population. They were found in a hotel room in Jasper County, S.C. two days later after a woman delivering them a pizza recognized them.

Aided by wire cutters that authorities believe were flown in by a drone, Causey made it out of his cell, exited the dorm and cut through a series of metal fences.

When arrested, the authorities said he had four mobile phones, $47,654 in cash, a pistol, and a shotgun.

Not surprisingly, officials plan to keep Causey in an extra-high-security unit to prevent a third escape. Officials are still probing exactly what happened leading up to and following the escape.

An ongoing internal review of what led to the escape has resulted in one Lieber employee being fired, Corrections spokeswoman Sommer Sharpe said.

Gov. Henry McMaster echoed Stirling in calling for the Federal Communications Commission to allow for the jamming of cellphone signals at state prisons.
