CNN extorted apology from creator of Trump wrestling gif
07 July 2017, 01:02 | Denise Dawson
The origin of the specious
The gif that started it all includes footage from WWE Wrestlemania in 2007, where Trump bodyslams WWE's chief executive Vince McMahon in a "Battle of the Millionaires".
After Mr Trump's tweet, CNN said: 'It's a sad day when the president of the United States encourages violence against reporters'.
CNN host Chris Cuomo deleted a tweet Wednesday asking followers if the network should reveal the name of a Reddit user who created a gif tweeted by President Donald Trump.
It followed up with, "CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change".
The article quickly attracted criticism from both the left and right. That's going too far. The term CNN Blackmail was trending across social media, with many noting the network's apparent hypocrisy for using anonymous sources in their own reporting.
READ: Trump Sons Catching Animals: Donald Jr. Kaczynski tweeted that the user told him he had not been threatened in any way. "Seems in line w [ith] their 'standards, '" he wrote. Some critics also suggested that CNN was threatening a teenager, though Kaczynski later tweeted that the user was a middle-age man.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Wednesday called the CNN report "troubling". They confirmed this person's identity.
CNN, however, maintains that they did not threaten or coerce the user in any way. Once CNN mentioned the HAS' username on air, he proceeded to scribe a lengthy apology letter before deleting the remainder of his posts.
The seemingly conditional statement about revealing the user's identity became a flashpoint, with prominent - and largely, but not exclusively, right-wing - accounts accusing CNN of "blackmail".
"CNN never made any deal, of any kind, with the user", the statement continued.
In Kaczynski's article documenting how he found "HanAssholeSolo", the meme creator, he wrote that because Mr. "I hope it does serve others as an inspiration to stop".
Some are calling it blackmail, others that CNN is anti-free speech a bad thing to say about a media outlet, it is extremely petty at the least.
"First of all, I would like to apologize to the members of the Reddit community for getting this site and this sub embroiled in a controversy that should never have happened", the user wrote on The_Donald sub-Reddit. He also deleted all of his other posts on the subreddit/The_Donald, a group chat of the president's fervent followers.
Adding to the drama, however, is the question of how this video wound up in Mr Trump's hands in the first place.
HansAssholeSolo said the original clip he created featured no sound, although the video Trump shared on his social media account had had commentary added to it - something the Reddit user was unaware of before he took credit for it.
