National Archives shows a woman who resembles Amelia Earhart on a dock in the Marshall Islands

This was not a simple mention of the 80-year anniversary of Earhart and Noonan's disappearance, this was the announcement of a newly-discovered photograph that could solve one of the world's greatest mysteries. She's shown on a dock, with her back to the camera.

Historians believe the picture, labeled "Jaluit Atoll", was snapped by an American spy in 1937 - the year that Earhart went missing.

The legendary aviator disappeared somewhere in the South Pacific in 1937 as she was attempting to become the first female pilot to circle the globe. The team's new findings are also supported by long-standing reports by locals who claim to have seen Earhart crash in the Marshall Islands, and be taken into Japanese custody.

Executive Producer of the History special, Gary Tarpinian, said, "We believe that the Koshu took her to Saipan [in the Mariana Islands] and that she died there under the custody of the Japanese".

A former federal agent saying he uncovered this undated photo taken on the Marshall Islands in the National Archives. Those parts were found by Dick Spink, an Earhart investigator, and are consistent with her craft in 1937.

"The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Itasca did receive several strong voice transmissions from Earhart as she approached the area, the last at 8:43 a.m. stating: "We are on the line of position 156-137". She has a haircut that's "too long for a man but too short for a native woman" and she's wearing trousers. As expected, a lot of independent analysts have tried to analyze the legitimacy of the photo and they all have a common observation upon close examination of the photo - it is legitimate and undoctored. Some point to similarities between the man's receding hairline and Noonan's actual appearance.

Barring Chamari Atapattu, their batters have failed to impress, and bowlers lack attitude in the Sri Lankan attack. Shashikala Siriwardene and Dilani Manodara added 60 runs for the fourth wicket to keep their side in the hunt.

Facial recognition expert Kent Gibson said the people on the dock looked like Earhart and Noonan and believes it is "likely" the lost aviators.

The Japanese government denied having any record of Earhart and Noonan being held in captivity, but many records from the time were destroyed in World War II.

Experts say the mass, being towed behind this ship matches the length of Earhart's plane.

The documentary airs Sunday night on the History Channel.

It is not clear if the USA government knew who was in the photo.

"We believe she died as a castaway", he said.
