OR plans to trap and test mosquitoes for the Zika virus this summer, according to the state public health veterinarian.

The virus is spread through the bite of a mosquito that had been feeding on an infected bird.

"Rain followed by hot temperatures gives mosquitoes a jump start; we want to ensure that all residents are being proactive and doing everything they can to prevent mosquitoes from breeding on their property", Goodman said.

The health department sets 50 traps throughout the county each week in order to monitor the mosquito population and to identify West Nile Virus. These symptoms can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks; however, four out of five people infected with the virus will not show any symptoms at all. Although there is no vaccine available for people, there are several vaccines available for horses.

But others in the administration suggest that more could have been done. "I feel like we sort of choked", he declared. The inauguration of President Trump did nothing to hinder the evolution of this program, the Post reports.

Statewide, there have been seven mosquito samples that have tested positive for the virus. People are advised to keep their horses vaccinated annually.

Kansas health officials are warning the public that West Nile virus could be a problem earlier than in past years. The state has had 51 cases of Zika infection in OR since January 2016.

Two types of mosquitoes carry Zika - Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.

"Positive mosquito tests are a reminder that preventative measures are important", said Dr. Faisal Khan, director of the department. However, mosquitoes spawned by flooding can not carry West Nile. The best way to prevent a bite is to use an insect repellant, wear long sleeved shirts and get rid of standing water near residences.
