'Cars 3' Takes Checkered Flag With $53 Million Opening
The new animated film from Disney-Pixar earned an estimated $53.5 million, putting it behind the first Cars' $60.1 million debut and the sequel's $66.1 million opening weekend.
'Cars 3' from Disney came in at No. 1 this weekend. Internationally, Wonder Woman made an additional $39.5 million for a foreign total of $297.2 million and worldwide cume of $571.8 million.
The first two films in the "Cars" franchise have reflected the growing clout of markets overseas.
Lightning McQueen and his pals in "Cars 3" raced to the top spot at the box office this weekend, pushing "Wonder Woman" into second place for the first time since it opened. With an estimated $40.7 million from 4,018 locations, the Warner Bros. and DC Comics film is seeing another extremely low drop of 32% from last weekend. Tupac biopic "All Eyez on Me", Bachelorette comedy "Rough Night", survival horror "47 Meters Down", and the critically panned "The Book of Henry" also opened on Friday, to varying results. The film - which was criticized on Twitter by Jada Pinkett Smith for its inaccuracies - did not receive many positive reviews (EW's Leah Greenblatt gave it a B-), but audiences seemed to enjoy the movie's rendition of the cultural icon and prolific rapper's (played by Demetrius Shipp Jr.) life, giving it an A- on CinemaScore. The release date aligns with what would have been Shakur's 46th birthday. It's the first major release from Entertainment Studios, which acquired the project from its original distributor, Dimension Films.
Fifth place went to 47 Meters Down, the adventures of two sisters who fend off a shark attack after going cage diving. Lucia Aniello directed the film.
Sony Pictures' R-rated comedy "Rough Night", featuring Scarlett Johansson and Kate McKinnon, was a miss with a take of $8.1 million, or only about half of the $16 million projection of BoxOfficePro.com.
"It is genuinely a amusing movie that was made at the right price, and there is a place for Rough Night as summer counter-programming in the coming weeks", said Sony's distribution chief Adrian Smith.
