Justin Thomas enjoys record third round at US Open

Justin Thomas and his pink pants just hit the putt of the US Open

Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa chips to the ninth hole during the second round of the U.S. Open golf tournament Friday

Justin Thomas had already made a putt with his back to the hole on No. 5.

Oosthuizen, whose sole major title to date came at St Andrews in 2010, birdied the first, fourth, seventh and eighth to move to four under par, while 2015 victor Spieth had covered his first 11 holes in level par. But those errors were comfortably outweighed by nine birdies and a spectacular eagle at the par-five 18th, where he hit his approach shot to eight feet from 299 yards.

Thomas, the world No 13, became the 28th player to fire a 63 in a major championship and the first since Henrik Stenson stormed to victory in The Open at Royal Troon last July.

His ball ended up just over six-feet away, and Thomas looked likely to gain the outright lead with an eagle.

Tied at eight under are Patrick Reed (finished with a 65), Charley Hoffman (through 11 holes), Brooks Koepka (5), Tommy Fleetwood (5) and Brian Harman (4).

"It means I have a lot better chance to win the tournament than I did when the day started", Thomas said after his round. Once again he called after his three-wood, this time to his caddie.

Pentagon Set to Send About 4000 More US Troops to Afghanistan
ABC News looks at the change and whether anything will change in the USA military posture in Iraq , Syria and Afghanistan. However, toward the end of Karzai's term, the Taliban reorganized and began to control more of the country.

"I wasn't trying to make three, I was just trying to make four".

"I couldn't hit it [the approach] any better if I tried".

It is because of Miller's rough-around-the-edges personality that golf fans on Twitter had a field day with Thomas breaking his record. "Being in contention in a major is fairly new for me".

It may have been just Saturday at the US Open, but Thomas will more than likely be up there in one of, if not the final group tomorrow.

"Regardless, I'm going to have to play a good round tomorrow", Thomas said.
