Doctors expect Scalise to walk again

18 June 2017, 02:11 | Felicia Parsons

Although Scalise was able to talk on the ballfield, by the time he was transported by helicopter to the hospital, he was in shock. The trauma director said it was too soon to estimate how long hospitalization would be necessary.

"I would say that when he arrived he was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death", Sava told reporters Friday afternoon. Mr Scalise, 51, sustained injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in his left hip on Wednesday morning on a baseball field in a Washington suburb.

Scalise will need more operations for his injuries, but doctors can't yet predict how many are necessary. "Five people were wounded in the assault, including a member of House Leadership -- my good friend, Steve Scalise", Trump said in his weekly web and radio address to the nation.

Doctors expect Mr Scalise will eventually be able to walk and return to work at "full capacity".

Earlier Friday, Trump said during an event in Miami that Scalise "took a bullet for all of us" in the surprise attack in Alexandria, Virginia. "Because of him and the tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer and more unified", Trump said. "He clearly knows that they're there and appreciates their presence", Sava said.

Retired UFC champ Hughes injured in train accident
Hughes, 43, was a two-time All-American wrestler at Eastern Illinois before transitioning to mixed martial arts after college. White, who spoke to ESPN after hearing news of the accident, said that Hughes was driving a truck that collided with a train.

Because the bullet shattered, there may be hundreds of fragments in Scalise's body and doctors do not intend to try to remove them all, Sava said. "We all owe Steve a big, big thank you".

Hodgkinson posted content favorable to Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders on his social media accounts and signed a Change.org petition for the removal of Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. The offices of both senators - Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth - turned over the emails to Capitol Police and declined to offer specifics about their content. Hodgkinson also contacted the office of Rep. Mike Bost, R-Ill., at least 10 times over the past year, a Bost spokesman has said, characterizing the emails and phone calls as negative but not threatening.

Griner and Bailey have been hailed as heroes after taking down the shooter.

As for Scalise, he's still in critical condition, but he's improving. Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and critically injured and remained hospitalized.
