Rory McIlroy battling tweaked back in 2017 Players Championship
The four-time major victor struggled with a "manageable" back problem throughout last week's Players Championship, which he believed to be from excessive practice in the lead up to the event after three weeks off for his wedding and honeymoon. He's targeting early next week to decide whether he is fit to compete in the tournament, but for now, he's scheduled to play.
During The Players, McIlory was slowed by the recurrence of a nagging back injury, reaching behind to the bottom of his lower-left shoulder blade to show where he feels the twinge. Hopefully that's what the scans show.
The pain he's feeling this week feels like muscular discomfort instead of pain in a bone or joint, he said. Despite missing these events, however, McIlroy continues to insist that the injury isn't a problem. McIlroy noted early in the week that he thought he might have reinjured the rib he fractured earlier in the year.

"My back has got a little bit stiff again, I guess just from obviously building it up and playing through and then not doing anything for three weeks and then coming back last weekend and hitting balls for four or five hours a day", McIlroy said.
McIlroy, who ranks 48th in the FedExCup, has finished in the top 12 in the past four PLAYERS.
