Beautiful weekend before a stormy pattern returns

There was an unconfirmed report of a tornado touchdown near US 8 and Cranberry Lake Road and ping pong ball sized hail in that area.

Thunderstorms will blossom late Tuesday afternoon from southwestern Iowa though southeastern Nebraska, west-central Kansas and into the Texas Panhandle. Thunderstorms containing hail and damaging winds are possible before 4 a.m., the weather service said. The Storm Prediction Center, which specializes in forecasting and gathering data on tornadoes, says that high winds during a tornado can rip a mobile home without a foundation from its moorings. Chances are near 60% for these storms. The best chance for storms on Saturday will be in the morning with more isolated storms by the afternoon if not dry.

KCCI meteorologists are tracking a system likely to bring severe storms to the state. Gusty south winds will help you cool off though, which is nice, but gusty winds can also increase symptoms if you are an allergy sufferer. We will watch for a lull in rain activity this afternoon and a break in some clouds.

Latest radar trends indicate a cluster of showers and thunderstorms moving east along the Illinois-Wisconsin state line. As of 10:00 UTC on Wednesday May 17, the NWS has received 287 filtered reports of severe weather for Tuesday May 16, including 27 tornado and 150 hail reports.

Residents and travelers from Minnesota to Texas will need to monitor the forecast and keep flashlights and weather radios handy over the next several days. Severe weather also continues at times the rest of the work week. Forecasters say counties in far western Oklahoma will have the greatest likelihood for tornadoes Tuesday evening, with lesser chances in central Oklahoma, including the Oklahoma City metro area. If that batch gets organized, those storms will move east along the warm front and turn southeast across SE WI.
