"China should no longer try to test the limits of the DPRK's patience", the commentary warned, referring to the North by its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The country's Joint Chiefs of Staff has prepared a system called the Korea Massive Punishment and Retaliation (KMPR) that would involve surgical missile attacks, exclusive special warfare units and an ability to strike North Korea's leadership if South Korea feels threatened by nuclear attack. North Korea hinted at further nuclear tests as recently as this week, saying it will bolster its nuclear force "to the maximum" "in a consecutive and successive way".

"We will ferret out and mercilessly destroy to the last one the terrorists of the US CIA and the puppet ISIS of South Korea", the statement said, adding that the plot was tantamount to "the declaration of a war".

Reclusive North Korea warned this week that USA hostility had brought the region to the brink of nuclear war.

KCNA laid out the alleged plot in great detail, saying it was hatched in 2014 when the South Korean and USA intelligence agencies recruited a North Korean working in the timber industry in eastern Russian Federation.

North Korea conducted an annual military parade, featuring a display of missiles and overseen by top leader Kim Jong-un and his right-hand men on April 15 and then a large, live-fire artillery drill 10 days later.

The North's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Kim visited military detachments on Jangjae and Mu islets and was briefed on the "recent movements of the enemy".

China on Friday opposed unilateral sanctions on North Korea by Washington, a day after the US House of Representatives approved a law granting more power to the executive to take such a step. He also warned other countries their firms could face so-called secondary sanctions for doing illicit business with Pyongyang.

South Korea's defence ministry said it didn't have an immediate comment on the report.
